What each price band buys
- ₹250–₹600 — single-wall steel. No insulation at all; the benefit is simply that it is not plastic. Water reaches room temperature within an hour or two.
- ₹600–₹900 — entry double-wall, often uncertified. Some genuinely insulate; some are double-walled with air rather than a vacuum, which is a much weaker effect.
- ₹900–₹1,700 — the sensible band. Genuine vacuum insulation, food-grade 304 inner wall, a lid designed to be dried, and usually a certification you can check.
- ₹1,700–₹2,500 — lid engineering, finish, colourways, spares availability. The insulation is not meaningfully better; the ownership experience is.
Why vacuum insulation has a price floor
A vacuum bottle is two complete steel walls with the air evacuated from between them and the seal closed permanently. That is two shells, a joining process, an evacuation step and a quality check — none of which can be skipped and all of which cost money.
Which is why a "1 litre insulated steel bottle" at ₹400 is worth being sceptical about. It is usually single-wall, or double-walled with air still in the gap. The quickest check is weight: two steel walls cannot be light.
What to verify at any price
- Certification. BIS IS 17526:2021 covers vacuum insulated stainless steel containers in India and is granted per product. Ask which SKU holds it, not whether the brand "has BIS".
- Steel grade. Food-grade 304 on the inner wall. A listing that names no grade has told you something.
- The lid. Bottles fail at the lid, not the body. It should come apart enough to dry properly.
- Spares. Whether a replacement lid can be bought is the cheapest test of expected lifespan.
