Private label runs on a ladder. Level one is your logo on a stock bottle — lowest cost, lowest commitment, and where almost everyone should start. Level two is your own colour, which typically needs around 1,000 units. Level three is custom packaging and lid configuration. Level four is your own tooling, which is a different order of capital and the only level where you own the shape.
Key Facts
- Logo on a stock bottle starts at 25 units with HYV.
- A custom colour typically requires around 1,000 units.
- Your own mould is the only level where you own the shape.
- Production after artwork approval typically runs 7 to 14 days.
- What you own differs at every level — ask before you commit.
The four levels
- Branding on a stock product. An existing bottle with your logo applied by UV printing or laser etching. Lowest MOQ, fastest turnaround, no tooling cost. At HYV this starts at 25 units.
- Custom colour. The same bottle in a colour you specify. Requires a dedicated powder-coating run, which is why the floor is typically around 1,000 units.
- Custom configuration and packaging. Your choice of lid on a given body, your own box, insert and card. Adds cost per unit and lead time rather than a large one-off charge.
- Custom tooling. Your own dies, your own shape, a bottle nobody else can sell. This is a different order of capital, it carries a long lead time, and it only makes sense at genuine volume.
What you actually own at each level
This is the question most first-time private-label buyers do not ask, and it matters when you are building a brand rather than filling an order.
- Level one: you own your brand and your artwork. The bottle shape is the manufacturer’s and they can sell it to anyone, including a competitor.
- Level two: same, plus a colour that in practice is yours for as long as you keep ordering it. Not exclusive by default — ask, and get it in writing if it matters.
- Level three: you own the packaging design and the configuration choice.
- Level four: you own the tooling and therefore the shape. This is the only level that produces something genuinely defensible.
None of this makes levels one to three a bad idea. It means you should know what you are buying: at the lower levels you are buying a brand and a route to market, not a product nobody else has.
Where the costs actually sit
- Unit cost falls with quantity, and the curve is steepest in the first few hundred units.
- Artwork setup is usually a one-off per design, small relative to everything else.
- Colour runs are the first real step-change in commitment.
- Packaging is often underestimated — a printed box can cost a meaningful fraction of a budget bottle.
- Tooling is the big one, and it is a per-shape cost, not a per-order one.
- Working capital. You pay on production and sell over months. This is what actually constrains most private-label brands, not the unit price.
The questions to ask a manufacturer
- What is the MOQ at each of the four levels?
- What is the lead time, measured from artwork approval rather than from order?
- What steel grade, and is there third-party certification on the models I am buying?
- Is the colour or configuration exclusive to me, and for how long?
- What is the defect policy, and who pays freight on a replacement run?
- Can I have a physical pre-production sample before the full run?
- Do you sell replacement lids and gaskets, so my customers can keep the product alive?
That last one is more important than it sounds. A private-label brand whose bottles become unusable when a gasket hardens has a repeat-purchase problem disguised as a parts problem.

What is the minimum order for private label water bottles?
At HYV, 25 units for your logo on a stock bottle by UV printing or laser etching, and around 1,000 units for a custom colour. Your own tooling is a different order of commitment entirely.
Do I own the bottle design in a private label deal?
Only if you pay for your own tooling. At the lower levels you own your brand and artwork, while the shape remains the manufacturer’s and can be sold to others. Ask about exclusivity and get it in writing if it matters.
How long does a private label order take?
Typically 7 to 14 days of production after artwork approval. Most delays happen before that — at the approval stage — so send final artwork with the order rather than after it.
Does private label include certification?
It depends on the model. Five HYV models carry BIS IS 17526:2021 — LuxeSip, LuxeFlow, MagFlex, CoreFlow and ChillSip — and private label on those inherits that testing. Ask any manufacturer which specific models are covered rather than accepting a general claim.
