Starting A Drinkware Brand In India: What The First Order Looks Like

A first drinkware order should be one SKU: one capacity, one colour, one lid. A range splits your cash, your photography and your reviews before you know which lid people actually want. Pilot the exact configuration you intend to scale, because a sipper pilot teaches you nothing about chug-lid complaints, and keep the branding method identical between pilot and scale run so your photographs and your reviews still describe the product you reorder. Then write a brief that can be confirmed: SKU and capacity, lid type, steel grade, a physical colour reference, artwork with placement, packaging, the retention claim and its protocol, quantity and dates. HYV's minimum is 25 units per SKU and the lead time is 7 to 14 days from a confirmed brief.

Key Facts

  • One SKU for a first order: one capacity, one colour, one lid, so the result is readable.
  • Pilot the configuration you intend to scale, including the lid, or the pilot answers the wrong question.
  • Changing branding method between pilot and scale makes the reorder look like a different product.
  • HYV's minimum is 25 units per SKU, against an industry norm nearer 1,000 to 5,000.
  • Lead time is 7 to 14 days from a confirmed brief: roughly 7 to 10 business days to produce plus 2 to 3 to deliver.

One SKU, not a range

The instinct on a first order is to cover the ground: two capacities, three colours, a tumbler as well. Resist it. Every extra variant multiplies your cash tied up in stock, your photography, your listing copy and your packaging, and it divides the only asset a new brand is actually building, which is a pile of reviews on one page. Worse, a spread order makes your results unreadable. If you launch six variants and sell forty units, you cannot tell whether the winner won because of its colour, its lid or the order of your product photos. One SKU gives you a clean answer and a small bill, and a minimum of 25 units per SKU means that answer does not require a warehouse to obtain.

Pilot the configuration you intend to scale

A pilot is only worth running if it tests the thing you will sell at volume. Three places people get this wrong. The lid: if your plan at scale is a chug cap, pilot the chug cap, because sipper feedback tells you nothing about the complaints a chug spout generates. The colour: a bespoke colourway sits at 1,000 units, so if you pilot on a stock colour and intend to scale into your own, accept that the scale run is a genuinely different order with a different minimum, and do not tell customers the colour is coming until it is placed. The format: a tumbler and a sealed bottle are not interchangeable, and the honest numbers differ — HYV's 750 ml to 2 L bottles are rated 24 hours cold and 12 hot, while the 1.2 L tumblers are rated 12 cold and 8 hot. Pilot the one you will actually market.

Keep the branding method constant

Laser etching and UV printing do not look alike and do not age alike, so switching between them is a silent product change. An etch is a permanent mark in the surface with no colour of its own; a print is a cured ink layer that can carry full colour and will eventually show wear at contact points. Pilot one and scale the other and three things break at once: your product photographs no longer match what ships, your early reviewers are describing a finish nobody can now buy, and your returns conversation becomes about a difference you introduced. Pick the method at the pilot, photograph that, and change it only as a deliberate relaunch.

What a confirmed brief contains

The clock starts when a brief is confirmed, not when you first email, so the brief is the deliverable. It should carry the SKU and capacity; the lid type and the part you will stock as its spare; the steel grade for both walls; a colour reference that is a physical part rather than a screen value; the branding method, the artwork in a usable format, and its placement and size; packaging, including whether it is stock or printed and who holds the artwork; the retention claim you intend to print and the test protocol behind it; the certification scope you intend to claim, remembering that a licence is granted per model and not per brand; the quantity per SKU; the delivery address and the date; and the acceptance terms. With that settled, HYV's lead time is 7 to 14 days — roughly 7 to 10 business days to produce and 2 to 3 to deliver. Know your own remedy before you promise one downstream: for a defect, HYV's remedy is a 7-day free replacement rather than a refund-return.

Disclosure

HYV contract-manufactures for other brands as well as selling its own, so the sequence recommended here is one we are paid to fulfil, and the advice to start with 25 units is advice that happens to match our own minimum. Where we hedge, the hedge is real: reseller margin is "up to 50%" and there is no guaranteed minimum, so treat anyone quoting you a floor with suspicion. One thing you can check without taking our word for anything: ask for the MOQ, the lead time and the remedy in writing on a quotation before you pay, and compare the document with this page. HYV is not the answer if your plan needs plastic, copper or glass bodies — we make none of those, though we do supply lids that fit glass bottles. HYV makes BIS-certified insulated steel bottles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many units should a first drinkware order be?

As few as will give you a readable result on one SKU. HYV's minimum is 25 units per SKU, which is enough to photograph, sell and gather feedback without committing cash to stock you cannot move.

Should I launch with several colours to see which sells?

No. A spread order makes the result uninterpretable and multiplies your photography and packaging. Launch one, learn, then add a second variant with the reviews from the first behind it.

Can my first order be in my own custom colour?

Only if it is large. A custom colourway starts at 1,000 units because it needs a coating-line changeover and a first-off approval, so most first orders use a stock colour with branding applied.

How long does a first production run take?

7 to 14 days from a confirmed brief: roughly 7 to 10 business days to produce plus 2 to 3 for delivery. The confirmation date is what starts it, so an unresolved artwork question delays everything.

What goes wrong most often on a first order?

Deciding something late — artwork, colour reference or packaging — so the brief is never confirmed and the lead time never starts. The second most common is piloting one lid and scaling another.
