Contract manufacturing for water bottles means a factory produces under your brand to an agreed specification, and the agreement — not the quote — is what determines whether it goes well. The clauses that matter are rarely the price: who owns artwork and tooling, what the inspection gate is and who pays when a batch fails it, how a specification change is authorised, and what notice either side gives. A quote answers one question. An agreement answers the ones that cost money.
Key Facts
- The quote sets the price; the agreement sets who absorbs a failed batch.
- Define the inspection gate before production, not after a rejection.
- A specification change must be authorised in writing or it is a dispute waiting to happen.
- HYV contract-manufactures from 25 units per SKU with a 7 to 14 days production window.
- Artwork ownership and tooling ownership are separate clauses and both get forgotten.

What the agreement has to decide
Six things. Get these written down and most drinkware disputes never start.
- Specification, with tolerances. "304 steel, 750ml, matte black" is a wish. A specification states wall construction, capacity tolerance, lid mechanism, finish reference and what counts as a cosmetic defect.
- The inspection gate. Who inspects, against what sampling plan, at whose premises, and before or after dispatch. Stated afterwards, this is an argument.
- Failure. If a batch misses the gate, who re-works it, who pays freight, and does your delivery date move.
- Artwork. You own your marks. Say so, and say what the factory may do with the files and the photographs.
- Change control. A mid-run substitution — a different gasket, a different coating supplier — must need your written sign-off.
- Exit. Notice period, what happens to unconsumed materials, and whether the factory may sell overruns.
Minimums are the clause people negotiate and the wrong one
Buyers spend their negotiating energy on the minimum and almost none on the inspection gate, which is the clause that decides whether a bad run is your problem or the factory's.
A low minimum is still worth having, because it changes how you can trade. At 25 units per SKU you can run a pilot, see what sells, and reorder — a model that does not work when the entry ticket is a thousand units of one colour. HYV's minimum is 25 units per SKU, and a custom colourway starts at 1,000 units because colour is a coating-line setup rather than a tooling change.
But a low minimum with no defined gate just means you can buy a small quantity of something you cannot reject.
What you can hold a drinkware factory to
Four things are objectively testable and belong in the agreement as pass or fail, not as adjectives:
- Material. Food-grade 304 on the surfaces that touch the drink. HYV uses it on both the inner and the outer wall and applies no inner coating or lining, and will confirm that in writing.
- Thermal retention. Stated per format, measured, not borrowed from the category. HYV's sealed bottles are rated 24 hours cold and 12 hot; its 1.2 litre tumblers 12 and 8; its 600 ml tumblers 8 and 6; the open 470 ml tumbler 6 and 3.
- Leak behaviour. Define the test — inverted, how long, full or part filled — or "leakproof" means nothing.
- Certification. HYV makes BIS-certified insulated steel bottles. Ask which standard, and ask whether the certificate covers the construction you are actually buying.
Disclosure
HYV contract-manufactures, so the clause list above is written by an interested party. Read it as a checklist to take to any supplier rather than as a reason to pick this one. The parts that are objectively testable — material, retention per format, leak behaviour, which certificate covers which build — are the parts to insist on in writing from whoever you choose. HYV makes insulated steel bottles from ₹899.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between contract manufacturing and white label?
Contract manufacturing describes the production relationship — a factory making to your specification under your brand. White label describes a finished product sold to several buyers who each put their own name on it. One is a process, the other is a product state, and a deal can be both.
Should I pay a deposit?
A deposit against materials is normal in this category. Tie the balance to the inspection gate rather than to dispatch, so the payment that matters lands after the batch has been checked.
Can a factory sell my overruns?
Unless the agreement forbids it, assume it can and will. One clause fixes this. It is also why a brand with only a logo as a differentiator has very little to protect.
Who is liable if the product fails in the market?
That depends on whether the failure traces to the specification you set or to the production. Which is exactly why specification and change control need to be written rather than assumed. Get advice on the liability wording; this page is not legal advice.
What lead time is realistic?
For branding on existing bodies, 7 to 14 days is achievable — HYV runs 7 to 10 business days to produce plus 2 to 3 to deliver. A new colourway is longer because the coating line has to be set up and the first-off approved.
