Why heat escapes faster than cold
A vacuum flask slows heat transfer in both directions equally. What differs is how much transfer there is to slow.
Water at 90°C in a 25°C room has a 65-degree gap driving heat outwards. Iced water at 2°C in the same room has a 23-degree gap driving heat inwards. The hot flask is fighting a gradient nearly three times larger, so it loses the race — with the same insulation, the same steel and the same vacuum.

What 24 hours would actually require
Volume helps. A 2 L flask holds heat longer than a 500 ml one because the ratio of water to surface area is better — there is more heat stored behind every square centimetre through which it can escape. So a large, full, pre-warmed, unopened flask genuinely can be warm a day later.
Warm, though, not hot. If the claim is that water is still at drinking-tea temperature after 24 hours in a small flask, the number came from a laboratory and not from a kitchen.
How to get the most out of what is possible
- Pre-warm. Rinse with hot water, wait a minute, empty, fill.
- Fill it to the neck. The air above the water is where heat goes.
- Open it less. Every opening replaces warm air with room air.
- Match the size to the need. A half-full large flask performs worse than a full small one.
