What it actually means
An insulated bottle is a double-wall vacuum vessel. There are two steel walls, and the air between them has been pumped out and the gap sealed.
Heat moves in three ways. Conduction needs material to travel through. Convection needs moving air or liquid. Radiation needs neither, but is a small effect at drinking temperatures. A vacuum removes almost all the material and all the air, so it removes the two mechanisms that matter — which is why a vacuum bottle holds temperature with no power, no ice pack, and no electronics.
Two things follow that people find surprising:
- Hot and cold are the same feature. The bottle is not doing two jobs. It is refusing to let heat cross in either direction, so it keeps tea hot and water cold by the identical mechanism.
- The outside stays at room temperature. If a bottle full of ice water feels cold to hold, the vacuum is absent or has failed.
What "insulated" does not mean
