On a single-wall bottle, a dent is purely cosmetic unless it stops the bottle standing up. Why steel dents in the first place
This is the property you bought, not a failure. Glass shatters and plastic cracks along a seam; steel deforms and stays whole. A bottle that dents on a stair edge is a bottle that did not spill its contents across the floor.
Thin-walled steel dents more readily than thick, and the base and the shoulder take most impacts because that is how bottles land.
Single-wall: cosmetic, with one exception
A single-wall steel bottle has one shell. A dent in it does nothing to how the bottle holds water, how it seals, or whether it is safe to drink from.
The one exception is a dented base. A bottle that no longer stands flat is a genuine daily annoyance and a tipping risk on a desk, and that is a reasonable reason to replace one.
Check the interior surface where the dent is. If the steel has creased sharply enough to crack the passive layer, you may see a rust spot start there later. A smooth dent is fine; a sharp crease is worth watching.
Vacuum-insulated: run the test
An insulated bottle is two shells with the air pumped out of the gap between them. The dent is in the outer shell. Two things can happen.
- The outer shell deformed and the seal held. The bottle looks worse and works exactly as before.
- The impact breached the seal. Air enters the gap, the vacuum is gone, and the bottle is now a heavy single-wall bottle.
The test takes twenty minutes. Fill with cold water, cap it, wait, then touch the outside. Room temperature and dry means the vacuum survived. Cold to the touch, or beaded with condensation, means it did not.
It cannot be repaired. Re-establishing a vacuum requires the sealing equipment used in manufacture.
Do not push it out
The common advice is to force a dent out with hot water, air pressure or a blunt tool. On a single-wall bottle that is merely difficult. On a vacuum bottle it is genuinely counterproductive: you are applying force to the outer shell of a sealed assembly, and a vacuum that survived the original impact can be broken by the repair attempt.
If the bottle still insulates, leave the dent alone. It is a mark, not a fault.
