How-To

What to Specify When Ordering Branded Steel Mugs

A steel mug enquiry becomes a comparable quote once eight lines are fixed: construction (single wall or double-wall vacuum), capacity, lid mechanism by name, handle or no handle, base diameter against the holder it must sit in, branding method and its placement, gasket material and spare availability, and finish plus packing. Leave any one of them open and suppliers will fill it with whatever is cheapest to make, and the quotes will not be comparable. Two commercial lines complete it: quantity per SKU and the date. With HYV the minimum is 25 units per SKU and lead time is 7 to 14 days from a confirmed brief. Trade pricing is quoted against a brief rather than published.

Key Facts

  • A quote is only comparable when construction, capacity and lid mechanism are all fixed in the enquiry.
  • Base diameter should be stated against the specific holder the vessel must sit in, then checked on a sample.
  • Gasket material and whether spare gaskets and lids are available decide the product's useful life.
  • HYV's minimum is 25 units per SKU and lead time is 7 to 14 days from a confirmed brief.
  • HYV offers laser etching and UV printing, and lists retail name etching at ₹150 a unit.

The short answer: MagFlex 1L, ₹1,899. Full reasoning below.

Lines one and two: construction and capacity

Start with construction, because it determines which industry can even bid. Write either "single wall" or "double-wall vacuum insulated", and if the latter, state the retention you require in hours and ask how it was measured. A supplier who answers in adjectives rather than hours has not tested it.

Then capacity, as a number and not as a size name. "Large" means nothing across suppliers. An insulated body is always wider outside than its contents suggest, so if both the volume and the outside diameter are tight, say which of the two is the hard constraint.

HYV's available capacities are worth checking against your brief before you draw artwork, because it does not make every size. There is no 250ml, 500ml, 1.5L or 3L in the range.

Lines three and four: lid mechanism and handle

Name the lid mechanism rather than describing the outcome. "Leakproof" is a claim; "screw cap with a silicone gasket", "sliding closure", "flip", "magnetic snap" and "straw lid" are specifications, and they behave differently when the vessel lies down in a bag.

State the handle decision explicitly, including when the answer is no. A handle on the body of a vacuum vessel is a separate tool and a join into the sealed cavity, so it changes development time, retention measurement and carton volume. If a grip is the actual requirement rather than a handle, say that, because it can often be met on the lid or with a boot instead.

HYV makes no handled mug, so for a mug brief its answer is the lidded tumbler format. The 600ml ChillSip is ₹1,199. For reference, the magnetic-lid MagFlex 1L is ₹1,899.

Lines five and six: base diameter and branding

Give the base diameter as a target with a tolerance, and say what it has to fit — a car holder, a cycle cage, a desk tray. Then verify it on a physical sample rather than from a drawing, because a silicone boot or a rolled base edge can add the millimetre that matters. Every HYV tumbler is specified to fit a car cup holder.

For branding, specify method, placement and artwork format together. Laser etching leaves a permanent single-tone mark; UV printing lays ink on top and can carry colour. HYV offers both. Placement needs a dimensioned window, not "centre front".

If names are involved, decide early whether they are per unit, because that is a different production flow from one repeated logo. Retail name etching is listed at ₹150 a unit.

Lines seven and eight: gasket, finish and packing

Gaskets decide how long the product stays usable. Specify the material, and ask whether replacement gaskets and whole lids can be bought later. HYV sells lids as spares, which is the practical test of whether a supplier expects the product to last.

Specify the steel on both walls, not just the inner one. HYV uses food-grade 304 stainless steel inside and out, with no inner coating or lining, confirmed in writing on request.

Finally, packing. State inner carton, master carton, whether a gift box is required and whether anything is printed on it. For a gifting order the box is part of the product; for resale it is a shelf unit and needs a barcode position. This is the line most often omitted and the likeliest cause of a delayed dispatch.

The two commercial lines that close it

Quantity, stated per SKU. The qualifier is the whole point: a spread across four colours is four minimums. HYV's floor is 25 units per SKU, and a colourway that does not yet exist starts at 1,000 units because it is a finishing run.

And the date. HYV quotes 7 to 14 days from a confirmed brief. Work backwards through artwork approval, since that is the stage that usually slips. Trade pricing is quoted against a brief rather than published, so expect to supply these lines before you get a number.

Disclosure

HYV manufactures branded drinkware and would be the vendor in the order this checklist describes, so the terms quoted are its own and the checklist is written by an interested party. Something you can test on any supplier, HYV included, without relying on this page: send the same eight lines to three of them and see which replies with hours, millimetres and a named mechanism instead of adjectives. Something HYV is not the answer for: a handled steel mug, or a capacity it does not make, such as 500ml. IS 17526:2021 is the Indian standard for vacuum-insulated vessels, and a licence under it is issued per model rather than per brand, so request the scope for the exact model quoted. HYV makes BIS-certified insulated steel bottles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single most important line in a steel mug enquiry?

Construction. Single wall or double-wall vacuum decides which industry can bid at all, and quotes across the two are not comparable on unit price.

How should I specify leakproofing?

Name the mechanism and the test. Ask for the closure type, the gasket material and the method used, rather than accepting the word leakproof on its own.

Should I ask for laser etching or UV printing?

Etching for a permanent single-tone mark, UV printing when the artwork needs colour. HYV offers both; supply vector artwork and a dimensioned placement window either way.

Why does the quantity have to be stated per SKU?

Because the minimum applies to each variant. With HYV, 25 units per SKU means a four-colour spread is four minimums, not one combined order.

What packing details should the order include?

Inner and master carton, whether a gift box is required, any printing on it, and a barcode position for retail. It is the most commonly omitted line and a frequent cause of dispatch delays.
