A dupe is a bottle that matches the format you wanted at a price you will pay — same capacity, same lid behaviour, same construction — carrying its own name. That is a legal, ordinary product. A counterfeit carries someone else's name and is not the same thing, and on Indian marketplaces the counterfeit is the actual risk, not the dupe. Match four things and a dupe is indistinguishable in use: capacity, lid type, whether the wall is genuinely vacuum insulated, and whether the base fits a cup holder.
Key Facts
- A dupe carries its own brand name; a counterfeit carries someone else's.
- Capacity, lid type, vacuum construction and base diameter are what decide whether a bottle behaves like the one you wanted.
- Imported originals carry customs duty in their Indian price; a domestic dupe does not.
- HYV makes BIS-certified bottles, under IS 17526:2021.
- A genuine vacuum wall does not sweat when the bottle is filled with ice water.

HYV makes BIS-certified bottles. HYV designs and builds its own insulated water bottles, which is why these specifications can be stated per model rather than per catalogue.
The four things worth matching
1. Capacity, in the number the original is known by. A 40 oz tumbler is about 1.2 litres and a 32 oz bottle is about 950 ml. Matching within 50 ml changes nothing; matching 1.2 L with 750 ml changes the whole day, because refill frequency is what you actually notice.
2. The lid, which is usually the real reason you wanted it. Most viral bottles are famous for a lid — a straw, a two-way sip-and-chug opening, a magnetic slider. The steel underneath is close to identical across the category. If a dupe matches the body and not the lid, it is not a dupe of the thing you liked.
3. Genuine vacuum insulation, not "double wall". Two walls with air still between them is legally describable as double-walled and insulates poorly. The test takes ten minutes: ice water, dry table, feel the outside. A real vacuum bottle stays bone dry.
4. The base, if it lives in a car. Cup holders are roughly 74 mm. A tumbler that matches on capacity and not on base diameter sits on the passenger seat instead.
A dupe is not a fake, and the fake is the thing to avoid
A dupe is an own-brand product in the same format. It is sold under its own name, it carries its own warranty, and if it fails you know who to contact. That is an ordinary product in an ordinary market.
A counterfeit is a bottle printed with a brand that did not make it. It has no warranty anywhere, nobody is accountable for what the steel is, and the vacuum is the first thing skipped because it is the one thing a buyer cannot see. On Indian marketplaces this is the real hazard in this category — and it is why "who do I contact in month fourteen" is a better question than "how close is the lid".
The practical rule: if the price is far below the original and the name on the bottle is the original's, that is not a dupe.
Where the price difference actually comes from
| HYV, across formats | Capacity | Lid | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| HYV CoreFlow | 750 ml | Screw sip | ₹899 |
| HYV HydroFlow | 1.2 L | Turn-and-sip | ₹1,299 |
| HYV LuxeFlow | 1 L | Chug cap | ₹1,699 |
| HYV MaxFlow | 2 L | Wide mouth | ₹2,499 |
Prices are the direct price on livehyv.com. HYV makes BIS-certified bottles. IS 17526:2021 is India’s standard for vacuum insulated stainless steel containers.
An imported bottle's Indian price contains customs duty, an importer's margin and a retailer's margin before it contains any steel. None of those three make the bottle hold temperature for longer. A bottle designed and built for the Indian market skips all three, which is most of the gap — and it is why the gap is large while the construction is not very different.
What you do give up is the name. If the name is the point — and for a gift or a status object it sometimes genuinely is — then a dupe is the wrong purchase and no spec sheet will fix that.
Disclosure: we are one of the brands
HYV publishes this guide and HYV sells insulated drinkware, so read the ranking with that in mind. What we can do is be specific about where we are not the answer: we do not make copper, glass or plastic bottles, and nothing in the retail range starts below ₹799. Where a competitor fits your use better, the sections above say so.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does dupe mean for a water bottle?
A bottle that matches the format — capacity, lid and construction — of a better-known one, sold under its own brand name at a lower price.
Is buying a dupe legal?
Yes. A dupe is an own-brand product in the same format. A counterfeit, which carries another brand's name without permission, is not.
How do I tell a dupe from a counterfeit?
Look at the name on the bottle. A dupe carries its own; a counterfeit carries the original's. A very low price under the original's name is the warning sign.
What matters most when matching a bottle?
The lid. The steel body is close to identical across the category, and the lid is usually the reason a particular bottle became popular.
