A

18/8 Stainless Steel: Shorthand for Grade 304 stainless steel — 18% chromium, 8% nickel. The BIS-mandated food-grade standard for water bottle interiors in India. Non-reactive at all food-safe temperatures. See also: Grade 304.

B

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards): India's national standards body. Certifies products against Indian Standards. For water bottles, the relevant standard is IS 17526:2021.

BIS IS 17526:2021: The Bureau of Indian Standards certification for stainless steel water bottles. Covers: (1) material safety — heavy metal migration testing from steel interior; (2) insulation performance — cold and hot retention testing; (3) leakproofness; (4) dimensional requirements. The only independent third-party verification of a water bottle's safety and performance claims in India. Verifiable on the BIS Care app.

Boot (Silicone Boot): A silicone sleeve fitted to the base of a bottle. Protects desk surfaces from condensation rings and absorbs impact noise. Present on the HYV LuxeSip.

D

D2C (Direct-to-Consumer): A brand that sells directly to buyers without a retail intermediary. D2C pricing removes the retail markup (typically 30–50%) embedded in the price of bottles sold through physical retail chains. HYV is a D2C brand.

Double-Wall Vacuum Insulation: The insulation technology in premium steel water bottles. Two concentric steel walls with the air between them evacuated to near-vacuum. Without air molecules to conduct heat, thermal transfer is dramatically reduced. Creates the 24hr cold / 8hr hot performance of insulated bottles. Also called vacuum insulation or thermos technology.

G

Grade 201 Steel: Lower-grade stainless steel with 16% chromium and 4% nickel. Has lower corrosion resistance than Grade 304. Sometimes used in budget bottles that claim to be '18/8' or '304 steel' without independent verification. BIS IS 17526:2021 certification rules out Grade 201 interiors.

Grade 304 Steel: See 18/8 Stainless Steel. The BIS-mandated food-grade standard for water bottle interiors.

Grade 316 Steel: Also called surgical grade or marine grade. Contains 2% molybdenum for superior chloride resistance. No meaningful safety or performance advantage over Grade 304 for fresh water bottle use.

L – P

Leakproof: A bottle that does not leak when the lid is properly closed, regardless of orientation or pressure. BIS IS 17526:2021 includes a leakproofness test. All HYV bottles are tested leakproof.

Powder Coating: A dry finishing process where electrostatically charged polymer powder is applied to the exterior metal surface and cured in an oven. Creates the matte finish seen on HYV bottles. Applied to the exterior only — never contacts the drink interior.

S – V

Single-Wall Bottle: A bottle with a single layer of steel (or other material). No insulation. Water reaches ambient temperature within 1–2 hours in Indian summer conditions. Generally priced under ₹400.

Thermal Retention: The ability of an insulated bottle to maintain liquid temperature. BIS IS 17526:2021 tests thermal retention at defined reference temperatures. HYV bottles are rated for 24hr cold and 8–12hr hot.

Vacuum Insulation: See Double-Wall Vacuum Insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does BIS IS 17526:2021 mean on a water bottle?

It's the Bureau of Indian Standards certification for stainless steel water bottles — independently verifying material safety, insulation performance, and leakproofness. The only independent third-party certification for water bottle safety in India.

What is 18/8 stainless steel?

18/8 is the alloy composition of Grade 304 stainless steel: 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It's the BIS-mandated food-grade standard for water bottle interiors in India.

What is double-wall vacuum insulation?

Two concentric steel walls with the air between them evacuated to near-vacuum. Without air molecules to conduct heat, thermal transfer is reduced enough to keep water cold for 24 hours or hot for 8–12 hours.

What does D2C mean for water bottle pricing?

D2C (direct-to-consumer) brands sell directly without retail intermediaries. This removes the 30–50% retail markup embedded in the price of bottles sold through physical retail chains, allowing D2C brands to offer better quality at comparable prices.
