Decide which product first

Single-wall steel is one layer. It is light, cheap, unbreakable and does nothing for temperature. For a school bottle or a giveaway where the budget is the constraint, it is a sensible product.

Vacuum insulated is two layers with the air pumped out. It costs more because it is two vessels rather than one, and it is the only version that holds temperature.

Manufacturers are usually stronger at one or the other. Asking which a supplier actually produces — rather than which they can source — sorts the field quickly.

What to put in the spec so you get what you think you ordered

Name the wall. "Stainless steel bottle" is satisfied by a single-wall body. If you want vacuum insulation, the words double-walled and vacuum insulated belong in the purchase order.

Name the grade, and say which wall. Grade 304 is standard for food contact. The one that matters is the inner wall, and a spec that does not say so has left a gap.

Ask for the finish schedule. Powder coat that chalks after a season is the most common complaint on branded bottles, and it is a process decision made before your order exists.

Writing the material line so it actually protects you

"304 stainless steel" on a quote leaves three questions open, and a specification that says only the grade protects nothing. A vacuum bottle has two walls and the grade can describe either. The inner is the one your drink touches; the outer is the one that gets dented. So specify surfaces: food-grade 304 on inner and outer wall, no interior coating or lining, lid contact surfaces stated separately.

On the grade itself, 316 is mostly a marketing upgrade for drinkware. The difference is molybdenum, which buys resistance to chlorides — valuable in marine and chemical use and close to irrelevant for water, tea and coffee in a vessel that gets washed daily. The line that matters more than the grade number is which surfaces carry it. And 18/8 is not a third, cheaper option: it states the composition that 304 designates. What is genuinely a lower tier is 201, which turns up when a price looks impossible for 304.

Two further lines belong in the same paragraph. Ask what material report covers the finished bottle rather than the steel coil — both are real documents and only one is about the thing you receive. And if any part of the brief involves changing the body rather than branding it, separate the fixed, free and tooling-required items before asking for a price, because a sentence like "the same but slightly slimmer" is the most expensive line a brief can contain.
