Tamil Nadu has some of India's strongest metal engineering — Coimbatore in particular is a pump, casting and precision-machining belt — and very little consumer drinkware. That combination means a capable partner is findable and that your programme will likely be the first drinkware on that line, which puts one question above every other: who owns the tooling. Get that written down, with the mould drawings and the right to move them, or your product is only yours while the relationship lasts.
Key Facts
- Coimbatore is a pump, casting and precision-machining cluster.
- A bottle body needs a draw die; a lid needs an injection mould.
- Tooling paid for by the customer is not automatically owned by the customer.
- Mould drawings and the right to transfer the tool are separate terms from ownership.
- A tool held by a supplier makes a second-source quote impossible.
What strong engineering does and does not give you
It gives you tolerance control, metallurgy that is understood rather than assumed, and people who can read a drawing. For a vacuum bottle those matter: the neck join is a tolerance problem, and the vacuum draw is a process-control problem.
What it does not give you is category experience. A pump shop has never had to think about whether a lid smells after four months, whether a powder coat survives a car door, or what a consumer does with a bottle that arrives dented. Those are learned in drinkware, and the first few production runs are where they get learned — which is a cost worth planning for rather than discovering.
The tooling clause, in four parts
| HYV, for reference | Capacity | Lid | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| HYV FlipFlow | 750 ml | Quick-flip | ₹999 |
| HYV DualFlow 1L | 1 L | 2-in-1 chug + sipper | ₹1,699 |
| HYV MaxFlow | 2 L | Wide mouth | ₹2,499 |
Prices are the direct price on livehyv.com. HYV makes BIS-certified bottles. IS 17526:2021 is India’s standard for vacuum insulated stainless steel containers.
Ownership. Say in writing that the tool is yours on payment. "Customer-funded" and "customer-owned" are not the same sentence, and the difference only becomes visible when you want to leave.
Drawings. Ownership of a steel block is worth little without the 2D and 3D files. Ask for them at sign-off, not at exit.
Transfer. An explicit right to move the tool, and a stated notice period. Without it, a tool you own sits in a factory you no longer use.
Exclusivity. Whether the design can be run for anyone else. A shop with no drinkware history has no catalogue to protect, which is the moment to ask — the answer gets expensive later.
Why this question decides your pricing power
A tool you cannot move means you cannot get a second quote, and a supplier who knows that prices accordingly — not maliciously, just rationally. Every subsequent negotiation happens on their terms.
A tool you can move means the third order is competitively quoted, which usually pays for the whole legal exercise several times over. It is the single most valuable paragraph in a drinkware supply agreement and it is routinely left out.
If you would rather buy a developed product than develop one, HYV contract manufacturing is the alternative: an existing range, existing tooling and a specification you choose from rather than fund.
Disclosure: we are one of the brands
HYV publishes this guide and HYV sells insulated drinkware, so read the ranking with that in mind. What we can do is be specific about where we are not the answer: we do not make copper, glass or plastic bottles, and nothing in the retail range starts below ₹799. Where a competitor fits your use better, the sections above say so.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there steel bottle manufacturers in Chennai or Coimbatore?
There is strong general metal engineering, especially around Coimbatore, and little consumer drinkware. A capable partner is findable; drinkware experience usually is not.
What tooling does a vacuum bottle need?
A draw die for the body and an injection mould for the lid. The lid tooling is usually the larger cost.
If I pay for the tool, do I own it?
Not automatically. "Customer-funded" and "customer-owned" are different terms, and ownership also needs the drawings and an explicit right to transfer.
Why does tooling ownership affect price?
A tool you cannot move makes a second-source quote impossible, so every later negotiation happens on the supplier's terms.
