What is powder coating on a water bottle — is it safe

⚡ Quick Answer

Powder coating is a dry finishing process applied to the exterior metal surface only — it does not contact your drink. It creates a durable, chip-resistant matte finish. All HYV bottles use powder-coated exteriors with uncoated food-grade 18/8 steel interiors.

How Powder Coating Works

The powder coating process involves three steps. The metal bottle exterior is cleaned and pre-treated. Dry polymer powder (usually polyester or epoxy-polyester blend) is sprayed onto the exterior using an electrostatic gun — the charge makes the powder adhere evenly. The coated bottle is then baked in an oven at around 180–200°C, which melts and cures the powder into a hard, continuous coating. The result is a uniform matte finish significantly more durable than liquid paint.

Is Powder Coating Safe?

Yes — powder coating is applied to the exterior and is fully cured before use. It does not contact the liquid inside. The interior of all HYV bottles is uncoated 18/8 stainless steel — no paint, no coating, no epoxy. The exterior powder coat is the same finishing technology used on outdoor furniture, bicycle frames, and automotive parts.

💡 Powder Coat vs Interior Coating — the Critical Distinction

Some cheaper bottles apply interior coatings (paint or epoxy) to the inside of the steel. This is fundamentally different from exterior powder coating — an interior coating contacts your drink and can degrade with hot liquids. All HYV bottles have uncoated steel interiors. If a bottle has any colour or coating visible on the interior surface, treat this as a safety concern unless independently verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is powder coating on water bottles safe?

Yes — powder coating is applied to the exterior only and does not contact the liquid inside. All HYV bottle interiors are uncoated food-grade 18/8 steel. HYV makes BIS-certified bottles.

Will the powder coating chip off into my drink?

No — powder coating is on the exterior only and does not contact the interior of the bottle or the liquid. If the exterior coating chips from impact, it affects aesthetics but not safety.

What creates the matte finish on HYV bottles?

The powder coating process. The dry polymer powder, when cured, creates the soft matte texture you see and feel on HYV bottle exteriors. Cashmere Beige, Midnight Black, Arctic White — all are powder coat finishes.

Do HYV bottles have any interior coating?

No — HYV bottle interiors are uncoated 18/8 food-grade stainless steel. No paint, no epoxy, no coating on the interior surface. Verified by BIS IS 17526:2021 certification.
