IS 17526:2021 is the Indian standard for stainless steel vacuum insulated bottles and flasks, and certification under it is granted per model rather than per brand. That is the single most important thing a buyer can know: a company holding a licence does not mean the item you are quoting is covered, because a different capacity or a different construction is a different product to the standard. The standard addresses material composition, construction and durability, thermal retention measured in a laboratory, leak resistance, corrosion resistance and labelling — so it is a test of the claims a brand makes rather than of the brand itself.
Key Facts
- Certification is granted per MODEL, not per brand. A licence does not cover a range.
- The standard covers material, construction, thermal retention, leak resistance, corrosion and labelling.
- Thermal retention is measured in a laboratory rather than taken from the label.
- Certification under the relevant Quality Control Order is mandatory for domestic stainless steel vacuum flasks.
- A certificate for one capacity does not transfer to another capacity of the same name.

What the standard actually examines
IS 17526:2021 is not a materials certificate with a thermal claim attached. It looks at the whole vessel:
- Material composition — the grade of steel, on the surfaces that matter.
- Construction and durability — whether the thing survives being used.
- Thermal retention — measured under defined conditions, which is the part a label cannot fake.
- Leak resistance — tested, rather than described as "leakproof".
- Corrosion resistance — relevant because a drink is not neutral.
- Labelling — what must be marked, and marked truthfully.
The practical consequence is that the retention hours on a certified bottle have been measured by somebody other than its seller. In a category where the performance-determining part is sealed inside a cavity nobody can inspect, that is most of the value.
Per model, not per brand — and why buyers get caught by it
A licence attaches to a product. Change the capacity, change the wall construction, change the lid in a way that affects the seal, and the standard treats it as a different item.
So a supplier can say, accurately, that it holds IS 17526:2021 — and the 2 litre you are quoting may not be a covered model. Nobody has lied. The buyer has read a brand-level statement as a range-level one.
Two questions settle it, and both belong in the enquiry rather than in the dispute afterwards: which exact models are covered by your licence, and is the model on this quote one of them. Ask for the answer in writing, against the quote line. A supplier who cannot answer per model does not have the licence they implied.
HYV makes insulated steel bottles from ₹899. For HYV, as for any manufacturer, the question above is the right one to put in writing on a specific order, and the trade route is where to put it.
What is testable even without a certificate
If you are evaluating an uncertified supplier, four things can still be checked by you rather than taken on trust:
- The dimple. Base cap off. No sealed pump-out port means no pumped cavity.
- The boiling-water test. Fill, seal, wait two minutes, touch the outside. Room temperature means the vacuum works. Hot means it does not.
- The sweat test. A cold fill on a working vacuum bottle leaves the outside dry in Indian humidity. Condensation means air in the cavity.
- The inverted-lid test, timed. Full, sealed, upside down, fifteen minutes on a paper towel. "Leakproof" is otherwise an adjective.
None of these substitutes for a laboratory, and none of them tells you what the bottle will do in two years — which is the gap certification exists to fill.
Disclosure
HYV is a manufacturer in this category and benefits from buyers taking certification seriously, so weigh that. The strongest thing on this page is also the thing that cuts against any single supplier: ask per model, in writing, against the quote line — and apply it to HYV exactly as you would to anyone else. Where HYV is not the answer: it does not advise on obtaining a licence, and nothing here is regulatory advice. HYV makes insulated steel bottles from ₹899.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is BIS certification mandatory for water bottles in India?
For domestic stainless steel vacuum flasks and bottles, yes — certification to IS 17526:2021 was brought under a Quality Control Order. Single-wall steel household articles sit under a different code and a different regime.
Does a certificate cover a whole brand?
No. It is granted per model. This is the most common misreading in the category and the reason to ask which exact models a licence covers.
Can I verify a licence myself?
Check against the specific model on the BIS Care app or the BIS listings rather than against the company name, since the licence attaches to the product.
What does the standard say about retention hours?
It requires them to be measured under defined laboratory conditions rather than asserted. That is why a certified bottle's stated hours mean more than an uncertified one's, and why per-format numbers are more credible than a single number for a whole range.
Does certification cover the lid?
Leak resistance is part of what is examined, so a lid change that affects the seal is a change to the certified item. Ask whether the lid on your quote is the lid that was tested.
