A laser on a steel bottle removes the coating and marks the metal underneath, so what you get is a single-tone mark in the colour of the steel — not your logo in its colours. That one fact decides most briefs. Line art, text and a simple monogram engrave beautifully; gradients, photographs and anything relying on brand colour do not, and should be printed instead or simplified before anyone fires a laser.

What the laser physically does
It burns away the powder coat and marks the steel. That is the whole process, and three consequences follow from it that briefs routinely ignore.
One tone only. The mark is the colour of exposed steel against the bottle's colour. A two-colour logo becomes one colour; a logo whose two colours carry meaning loses it.
Contrast depends on the bottle. The same artwork is crisp on a dark bottle and nearly invisible on a light one, because the mark is roughly steel-coloured either way.
Fine detail closes. Lines thinner than about a millimetre, and the gaps inside small letters, tend to fill in. A logo that works on a business card does not automatically work at 25 mm on a curve.

Send vector art — an SVG, an AI or a PDF with real curves — not a screenshot. A vector can be scaled to the bottle and thinned where it needs it; a 400-pixel PNG cannot, and the result is a soft edge that looks like a fault in the bottle.
Say where on the body it goes and how wide, in millimetres. "Centred, 40 mm wide, 60 mm from the base" is a brief; "normal size" is not, and the gap between those two is where most reprints come from.
Ask for a proof image before production, and read it for spelling first. Engraving cannot be undone — a wrong letter is a new bottle, not a correction — which is why an extra day on the proof is always cheaper than the speed.
Doing it locally, versus doing it with the order
A local engraver can be quicker for a single bottle you already own, and that is a real advantage. The cost is that you supplied the bottle, so the engraver is not accountable for it, and the maker is no longer accountable for a bottle that has been modified after sale. For a gift that has to be right, that is an uncomfortable place to stand.
