Corporate Diwali Gifts for Employees Under ₹5,000

₹5,000 is the single most important number in Indian corporate gifting, because it is not just your budget — it is the perquisite exemption ceiling under Rule 3(7)(iv). At or under ₹5,000 in aggregate per financial year, a gift in kind is tax-free in the employee's hands; a rupee over and the excess becomes taxable. So the whole job in this band is landing deliberately under the line. Take the obvious three-piece set of a LuxeSip 1L, a HydroMax 1.2L and a ChillSip tumbler. Set total ₹4,597 before etching, and ₹5,047 once all three are engraved — which is exactly the trap.

Key Facts

  • Budget ceiling: ₹5,000 — which is also the annual perquisite exemption limit per employee.
  • Rule 3(7)(iv): gifts in kind are exempt up to ₹5,000 in aggregate per financial year; the excess is taxable.
  • HYV's most expensive single item is MaxFlow 2L at ₹2,499, so this band is necessarily a set.
  • BIS IS 17526:2021 covers five models: LuxeSip, LuxeFlow, MagFlex, CoreFlow, ChillSip.
  • Etching at ₹150/unit is what most often pushes a set over the ₹5,000 line.

Why ₹5,000 is a cliff, not a budget

Every other band on this site is a spending choice. This one is a tax boundary that happens to look like a spending choice.

Under Rule 3(7)(iv), the value of gifts in kind an employer gives an employee is exempt from perquisite tax up to ₹5,000 in aggregate during the financial year. Land at or under it and the gift never appears on a payslip. Go over and the excess is a taxable perquisite — which means your generous Diwali gesture arrives with a tax deduction attached, and the employee experiences your ₹5,500 gift as a ₹5,500 gift minus tax they did not expect.

Two things follow, and almost nobody plans for either. First, the limit is aggregate for the year — a ₹5,000 Diwali gift uses the entire allowance, so a New Year hamper or a work-anniversary gift later in the same financial year is taxable in full. Second, the number you must stay under is the value of the gift, and engraving is part of that value.

The arithmetic trap

HYV's most expensive single object is the 2-litre MaxFlow at ₹2,499. There is nothing in the catalogue that costs ₹5,000, so a ₹5,000 gift is necessarily a set — and sets are where the ceiling gets breached by accident.

Work the obvious three-piece. A LuxeSip 1L is ₹1,699. A HydroMax 1.2L is ₹1,699. A ChillSip tumbler is ₹1,199. Set total: ₹4,597 — comfortably under. Now engrave all three, at ₹150 per unit. New total: ₹5,047. You have crossed the line by ₹47, and you crossed it for the cheapest component in the order.

The fix is not to drop the engraving — engraving is what makes it feel personal. It is to build the set to leave room for it.

Three sets that land under ₹5,000 with engraving

The certified pair, engraved. A LuxeSip 1L at ₹1,699 and a CoreFlow 750ml at ₹899. Both are BIS-certified models, and both are engraved. Set total: ₹2,898, which leaves ₹2,102 for packaging and a card. The cleanest answer in the band — two certified bottles, a name on each, well inside the ceiling.

Desk plus carry. A MaxFlow 2L at ₹2,499, a ChillSip tumbler at ₹1,199 and a silicone boot at ₹299, with engraving on the bottle only. Set total: ₹4,147. The 2-litre covers a full day without refilling; the tumbler covers the desk. Engraving one object rather than both is the deliberate saving.

The three-piece, engraved once. The same three items as above, but with a single engraving rather than three. Set total: ₹4,747. Three objects, ₹253 of headroom, and only one SKU carrying personalisation — which also shortens the lead time.

When you should deliberately go under

If you gift more than once a year, do not spend the whole ₹5,000 at Diwali. A ₹3,000 Diwali gift leaves ₹2,000 of exempt headroom for a year-end or anniversary gift; a ₹5,000 Diwali gift means every later gift that year is taxable in full. Most companies discover this in February.

The ₹2,500 and ₹3,000 bands exist partly for this reason — they are not smaller versions of this page, they are the right answer when the annual allowance has to stretch across two occasions.

Quantities and timing

Minimum order is 25 units per SKU — and that is per SKU, so a two-piece set means 25 of each, not 25 sets. Laser etching is ₹150 per unit. Keeping personalisation to one component of the set is both cheaper and faster.

A multi-SKU set takes longer than a single item: each component has its own stock position, and the set ships when the slowest one is ready. Budget 10–18 days for a three-piece engraved order in stock shades rather than the 7–14 a single engraved bottle takes. Diwali 2026 is 8 November; for a set, start in the first half of October rather than late October.

What finance will ask

Everything on this page depends on one line of the Income Tax Rules, so it is worth stating precisely. Rule 3(7)(iv) exempts gifts in kind to an employee up to ₹5,000 in aggregate during the financial year. At or under that, nothing reaches the payslip. Over it, the excess is a taxable perquisite valued at cost. Because the ceiling is aggregate and annual, spending the full ₹5,000 at Diwali means any later gift in the same year is taxable in full — which is the single most common way a well-intentioned gifting calendar goes wrong. GST input credit is separately blocked under Section 17(5)(h), so budget the GST as a cost. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best corporate Diwali gift for employees under ₹5,000?

A two-piece BIS-certified set, both engraved. A LuxeSip 1L is ₹1,699 and a CoreFlow 750ml is ₹899; with name etching on each, the set total is ₹2,898 — well under the ceiling, leaving room for packaging. If you want three objects, keep engraving to one of them so the total stays under ₹5,000.

Does a ₹5,000 Diwali gift attract tax?

At or under ₹5,000 in aggregate for the financial year, no — it is exempt under Rule 3(7)(iv). Above ₹5,000 the excess is a taxable perquisite for the employee. The limit is annual and aggregate, so a ₹5,000 Diwali gift uses the entire allowance and any later gift that year is taxable in full.

Does engraving count towards the ₹5,000 limit?

Yes — the limit applies to the value of the gift, and personalisation is part of it. At ₹150 per unit across a three-piece set that is ₹450, which is exactly what pushes a set total of ₹4,597 up to ₹5,047. Build the set to leave room for it.

Is there a single HYV product at ₹5,000?

No. The most expensive drinkware is MaxFlow 2L, at ₹2,499. That means this band is always a set of two or three items. The only product above ₹5,000 is the ReHYV Pulse Pro recovery system, which is a different category entirely and well above this band.
