When it has a sealing lid and holds about one serving. That combination makes a tumbler better than a ceramic mug for anything that moves: it keeps the coffee hot for hours, it does not spill into a bag, and it survives being put down on concrete.
When it is not
- Straw lids. A straw sends hot liquid straight to the back of your mouth at full temperature. Unpleasant at best.
